UPDATE: Voter ID Laws Now In Effect

Carrie J. Nierling, Deputy Auditor of Elections, Johnson County Auditor’s Office

At the start of 2018, new rules requiring voters to show identification to cast a ballot went into effect. However, a lawsuit has put some of those rules on hold—at least temporarily. At this time and throughout the fall 2018 general election...

Voting on Election Day. The identification requirements for voting on Election Day have not changed despite the lawsuit. Voters will be asked to provide one of the approved forms of ID.

-- The preferred ID is an Iowa driver’s license or non-operator ID.

-- Voters without a DOT-issued ID may use their voter ID card as long as it is signed before they present it to the precinct election official.

-- Voters may also use a US passport, US military ID or US veterans ID.

-- Voters without ID will not be turned away. Throughout 2018, they will be able to sign an oath of identity.

Voting Early. Voters who wish to vote early, either in person or by mail, will not be required to include an identification number on their absentee request form. A voter may include this information if they choose, but there will be no delay in receiving a ballot if it is not on the request form.

Beginning January 1, 2019, voters without one of the approved forms of identification will need to provide the same identity and residency documents as with an election day registration, have another registered voter in their precinct attest to their identity, or vote a provisional ballot.
